18 Unique Ways Loneliness Affects Men

Krystal Smith

Loneliness isn’t just about feeling socially isolated from people; it runs much deeper. We can often have many people around us, but we still feel disconnected and misunderstood by others. While loneliness can affect anyone, men often experience it differently due to societal expectations and gender stereotypes. Here are 18 unique ways loneliness can impact men’s lives.

Bottled-Up Emotions

Men are often taught to suppress their emotions and stay strong. But, the reality is that men can feel just as emotional as women, and bottling up their feelings can lead to deep sadness. When men feel that they can’t express themselves fully, it can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation, which exasperates their negative mood.

Diminished Empathy

Social connection allows us to develop empathy with others.  Loneliness can make it harder for men to connect with others’ emotions, creating a vicious cycle of isolation as they cannot truly connect with people.

Loss of Purpose

For many men, social connections provide a sense of belonging and identity. Close friendships, camaraderie, and a sense of community can be crucial for feeling grounded and purposeful when men feel like no one needs or cares, leading to a loss of purpose and direction in life.

Increased Vulnerability to Mental Health Issues

Research published in The National Library of Medicine showed that loneliness can lead to an array of psychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety.   Severe loneliness is also a significant risk factor for suicidal ideation in men.

Unhealthy Habits

Social isolation can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating, excessive alcohol consumption, or drug use. This can lead to a negative cycle of men not wanting to see people because they feel embarrassed by their health issues, which then heightens their sense of loneliness.

Weakened Immune System

Chronic loneliness can cause long-term health concerns as well as short-term issues. When we feel lonely, our bodies enter a state similar to the fight-or-flight stress response. This triggers the release of hormones like cortisol, which can suppress the immune system’s activity in the long term.

Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases

Studies found by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest loneliness is linked to higher risks of heart disease, stroke, and even dementia in men.

Neglecting Self-Care

Loneliness can make basic self-care like healthy eating, exercise, and doctor visits seem unimportant. You may also notice that men look unwashed or have dirty clothes and untidy homes as loneliness seeps into depression.

Strained Family Relationships

When men feel lonely, they can begin to resist support from family and friends, which may seem ironic, but it is a way of coping with their feelings. This can make it difficult to connect with family members, leading to misunderstandings and conflict, which deepens the sense of disconnection men experience.

Trouble Forming Romantic Relationships

Feeling lonely can make men insecure and withdrawn, hindering their ability to form romantic connections. When men feel so much self-doubt, it is hard to see how they can be good partners to someone.

Withdrawal from Friendships

Social isolation can lead to declining friendships and a lack of opportunity to create new ones. Even the most understanding of friends can become tired of getting their lonely friend to socialize and encourage them to be more positive.

Workplace Struggles

Feeling isolated at work can affect a man’s productivity and lead to trouble with bosses. The overall job satisfaction caused by loneliness can hinder careers and make men feel even more socially isolated.

Increased Anger and Aggression

Men often express their emotions through anger as they cannot effectively communicate their feelings. Loneliness can manifest as irritability, anger outbursts, or even aggressive behavior.

Risky Behaviors

Men who are experiencing loneliness might engage in risky activities like reckless driving or substance abuse to numb emotional pain. If you notice that men are taking risks and abusing drugs and alcohol, it’s a sign to reach out and see if you can help develop connections with healthier activities.

Social Anxiety

The fear of rejection can worsen due to loneliness, making it harder for men to start interactions with people. This results in men being quiet in social situations as they feel they are not good enough and people won’t like them.

Decreased Motivation

When loneliness and depression kick in, they can zap motivation and make it difficult for men to participate in activities or pursue goals. If you notice that the men in your life are not joining in with activities like they once would, it could be a sign they’re feeling isolated.

Physical Symptoms

Chronic loneliness can cause problems not only with mental health but also with physical health. Men may get a general feeling of being unwell, with symptoms mimicking a cold or flu that lingers. They can also experience aches and pains or a tingling sensation if suffering from anxiety.

Sleep Problems

Loneliness can disrupt one’s sleep cycle, so people may have trouble falling asleep or experience restless nights. Waking up feeling unrested is a sign of a sleep problem, which is why seeking a therapist can provide tools for managing loneliness and establishing a good self-care routine.
